Nose art on airplanes first became popular during WW1 when German airmen (or rather their ground-crews) started painting a mouth and teeth onto nose cones, rather like Moby Dick below. In fact a shark-face design is still painted on nose-cones of military aircraft today.

Nose art wasn't all sexy women and bombs, though. Some crews used their nose to (deservedly) brag. Don Gentile, World War II Eagle Squadron member and the first ace to beat Eddie Rickenbacker's WWI dogfighting record, flew a P-51B famously called Shangri-La, which featured a bird wearing boxing gloves.
